ATD 2016 It’s a Wrap! (PT3): Chris Coladonato

ATD 2016 It's a Wrap Chris

To know Chris Coladonato is to be sucked up into a vortex of energy!

She is one of the most curious people I know, which makes her perfect for the Learning Rebel family. If you recall being a Learning Rebel is all about three key attributes. Courage of Conviction, Challenging Status Quo, Insanely Curious. Chris models all three of these tenets. Therefore, I can’t tell you how thrilled I was that she accepted the challenge of writing out her thoughts around ATD 2016! Then to see that she broke her experience out into 3 C’s…it was the universe talking to us!

Her take on calibration is perfect, I was in this session (lead by the fabulous Michelle Ockers) and I have to agree. I have the calibration card from that session here on my desk. It’s the little things that sometimes become the price of admission!

Chris coladonato Without further delay here is Chris Coladonato with: ATD 2016: The 3 C’s to Reflection.

I took some time post-conference to hike in the Rocky Mountains and reflect on ATD2016.  I can honestly say that I learned TONS at this conference both in and out of sessions. As I continued to reflect, 3 things stood out to me that really I wanted to share: Calibration, Courage and Connections.
Calibration:  In the very last session I was at, Michelle Ockers and Emma Weber shared a simple, yet powerful tool that you can use with learners to do a quick self-assessment and reflection. You simply ask them to:

  • Identify the skill or behavior they want to work on
  • Rate their current skill level on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being fully skilled)
  • Share where they realistically see themselves on the scale after working on this skill for xx time
  • Identify what they need to do to get from their current level to the new level.  You could ask – what are you not doing now that you would be doing at your new level?

Simple, yet powerful…..

Courage:  This “C” was from the Brene Brown (LR note: here is the link to Brene’s Ted Talk a MUST WATCH!) keynote but to be honest, it’s been rattling around in my brain even before the conference.  For me, this is all about having the courage to say “I’m good enough” and “I have something to contribute”.  I often shy away from sharing my own ideas because I tell myself “who would want to hear what I have to say” and “there are others in the learning community that have probably said what I’m going to say”.  Since last year, I’ve been examining how I contribute to the learning community and realizing that I do it from the sidelines.  I’ve been choosing comfort and not courage.  I realized that I do have a voice, I do have something to contribute and owe it to myself and others in my learning tribe to show up and share.

Connections:  Conferences are great for connecting with others, but it doesn’t have to stop at the end of the conference.  How many of us exchange business cards and never follow up with the other person?  How many of us tweet at the conference never to tweet again?  Let the conference be the start of your connections and not the end.  We all learn so much from each other that it would be a shame to let that end at the conference.  To combat this, I had two conference connection goals.  One was to meet people in real life that I only knew through social media and the other was to make at least five new connections…ones that I would follow up with after the conference.  I met those goals at the conference, but part of my action plan post conference is to actively reach out to my new connections.  So, this week, I’m reaching out and asking to set up a short meeting with those new connections to continue our conference conversation.

I invite every conference attendee to pull out those ATD 2016 business cards they got or review those that they started following on Twitter and come up with a plan for actively connecting with them in the coming weeks.

Remember, we are all in this together!
