How can we go about developing and nurturing workplace communities that deliver rich harvests of learning?

With the increasing adoption of workplace collaboration technology such as Microsoft Teams or Slack, there are more communities organically taking root in our organizations. People are moving beyond the shadows of their work team and finding others with whom they share a common interest or purpose.

Workplace learning communities present fertile ground for learning professionals looking to support learning, performance, and growth. In the work done with the Emerging Stronger Initiative with Laura Overton and Michelle Ockers, the importance of workplace communities has continually bubbled up. All this led to a Cultivating Workplace Communities Tool developed for our publishing partner Go1.

This is where you come in. What are your experiences? How are you helping teams to gather learning from each other?

How do you go about identifying/cultivating workplace communities and then help take action to allow learning to thrive? In our tool, we broke this into the analogy of planting a garden:

  • First, we prepare. By understanding and improving community growing conditions.
  • Then we sow. We determine what seeds to sow to support learning and performance.
  • We help nurture. We water, fertilize, weed and prune the garden in order for learning to thrive.
  • Finally, we harvest. By gathering and using the fruits that developed.

Let’s connect and discuss how we are cultivating and supporting workplace communities within our organizations.

Join us on November 18th and let’s learn and grow together!
