Inspiring Self-Directed Learning

When we first think of “employee training” and its roots, it was HR’s responsibility to manage employees’ careers. The responsibility then shifted to L&D being the “owners of learning”. Now, as a new dawn of enlightenment is upon us, mature learning departments realize that ownership of learning is a fallacy – it’s being the “guide-on-the-side”, learning consultant, or even a learning curator. We see this being more prevalent today, due to the rapid changes in business today – employees are taking more interest in developing their own learning journey through self-directed learning actions.

Employees are the CEO of their development and career path.

How are we, as L&D professionals, inspiring our people to take more of an interest in their own development? How are we encouraging our baby birds to fly on their own, and chart a self-directed learning path?  To answer this, we must ask ourselves some very important questions.

  1. Do employees know they can take control of their own careers and development? Do they know how to make an effective switch to a more self-directed approach?
  2. Do employees know what “learning” or “training” is available to them? How are we curating and sharing information to inspire deeper thought? Are we being conduits to development? Are we connecting people to each other to support shared learning opportunities?
  3. Do employees know how to “Learn”? Do they value learning? Do they REALLY want to learn and master new skills? Do we encourage deep questioning?

This is where you come in.

Because we all work in different places, in different sectors, and with different audiences, self-directed learning journeys will look different. But we know there are effective practices to share.

  1. How are you talking about learning in your organization?
  2. How are you talking about learning to your clients?
  3. Is there a process we can share to inspire more self-directed learning?
  4. How do you activate managers to help with the quest?
  5. How do we encourage and help others to take stock of strengths and gaps?
  6. How are we helping those who might be interested in taking control of their learning, but have no idea how to start?
