Storytelling to Support Learning with Hadiya Nuriddin
We all know the power behind storytelling, but it’s not as easy as starting with “Once upon a time…”
➡️ Learners only benefit from stories if the storyteller knows how to add the right ingredients.
➡️ Stories can encourage empathy, but only if you know how to trigger empathy in your learners.
➡️ Stories can connect people through emotion, but only if you know what makes a person emotional and add it to your story.
➡️ People can recognize themselves in characters, but only if you build compelling characters that reflect learners’ lives.
Writing stories and using them as teaching tools are separate skills from instructional design—skills that must be deliberately learned and practiced. But when it’s done well, the results are meaningful and memorable to your audience.
📖 You’ll begin by defining what makes a story compelling and what qualities your stories must have to hit the mark.
📖 You’ll engage in exercises on how to find inspiration for stories, whether that requires interviewing SMEs or mining your own experiences.
📖 Then, use a character-driven approach to developing stories, since we know that characters are often proxies for your learners.
📖 You’ll employ tools and templates to build a character and then build a story that describes the journey between where the character is now and where they want to be.
During this session, you’ll practice writing those stories as scenarios for eLearning or instructor-led training using a tool that walks you through the process.
Ultimately – walk away with the ability to:
- Incorporate compelling elements in your stories so that they will connect with learners
- Find inspiration for your stories and how to use it to get started writing
- Build characters who resonate with learners
- Turn stories into scenarios to incorporate into your eLearning and ILT courses
Join us and learn what makes stories meaningful and how to use those stories as teaching tools.
